Adapting to Conditions

Stocks and bonds have been under pressure in recent weeks. To help put some perspective on this, we will zoom out and look at stock market data going back to the 1920s.

The first winter Olympic games were in France. It was January 1924, and Charles Jewtraw of the United States was the first person to be awarded a gold medal. His sport: the 500-meter speed skate. The 500-meter is a sprint.

Tying this back to investing, we rarely find sprinting a useful investment strategy. Perhaps a better analogy is the 50-kilometer cross-country. It's a longer-term skiing event, which requires lots of planning, pacing, and adapting to the conditions.
